Fake model photography: "With a very little effort, you can take existing photographs of everyday scenes and make it look like they're actually of miniature models.
It doesn't take much to fool the mind of the viewer, but there are a few basic rules you can follow to help convince your audience that they're looking at a railway set rather than the real world; see the section on picking the right photo at the bottom of this page. You'll need a copy of Photoshop CS or later to follow this tutorial. "

If anyone’s bought a Dell PC in the last few years, you probably know what I’m talking about. Just recently, I was helping a friend set up his brand new Inspiron 1300 and it took FOREVER for it to boot up. It’s a very dissatifiying experience to pull a brand new computer out of the box and be spammed with a bunch of trial software. After removing all of the crap, (wich took a significant amount of time) it booted much faster and performed like it should. I kept thinking it would be nice to have an automated way to remove all this stuff. Thus was born the Dell De-Crapifier script."

Although my 1.8 Dual G5 is plenty the power-horse for my daily tasks, iMovie/iDVD frame drops are driving me nuts. * 50 Gig drive capacity or larger.
* No USB or Firewire.
* Best case: everything will be internal.
* $320 is the budget.

Microsoft Readies 'BitVault' Self-Healing Data Store
Microsoft Readies 'BitVault' Self-Healing Data Store: "Microsoft is working to commercialize 'BitVault,' a Microsoft Research technology designed to store large volumes of seldom-changing information—the kind of material that overwhelms enterprises needing to house lots of compliance and reference data.
BitVault is Microsoft's code name for a 'content-addressable retention platform for large volumes of reference data.' BitVault incorporates P2P (peer-to-peer) technology for self-managing and self-healing and uses 'massively parallel repair' to reduce the vulnerability of data loss, according to a white paper on the project. Much, if not all, of the work on the BitVault strategy and working prototype seems to be coming out of Microsoft Research Asia.

Archaeology of the Undead: "Does the archaeological record hold any zombie-related lessons for us today? What can our ancestors teach us about meeting and, ultimately, defeating the undead menace?
The greatest lesson our ancestors have to teach us is to remain both vigilant and unafraid. Panic is the undead's greatest ally, doing far more damage, in, some cases, than the creatures themselves. The goal is to be prepared, not scared, to use our heads, and cut off theirs."

You can borrow a writing tool at any time. And here's a secret: Unlike hammers, chisels, and rakes, writing tools never have to be returned. They can be cleaned, sharpened, and passed on.
Each week, for the next 50, I will describe a writing tool that has been useful to me. I have borrowed these tools from writers and editors, from authors of books on writing, and from teachers and writing coaches. Many come from the X-ray reading of texts I admire."

Negotiation and Agility: "How should we reach wise agreements? How should we reach agreements that create good outcomes for both parties?
There are excellent answers to these questions. The answers stem from extensive research and apply to all kinds of negotiation, from buying used cars to nuclear disarmament. They were documented by Roger Fisher and William Ury in their classic book, 'Getting to Yes'. (It still sells over 3000 copies per week, 25 years after it was first published). Fisher and Ury have applied their findings in many areas, from industrial disputes and corporate mergers to the highest levels of international politics. They have personally facilitated peace talks in war zones around the world.
Fisher and Ury call their approach 'principled negotiation'. It contains four key elements:
Separate People from the Problem
Focus on Interests, not Positions
Invent Options for Mutual Gain
Use Objective Criteria
Each is explained in 'Getting to Yes'."

O'Reilly Network: What Is Web 2.0: "What Is Web 2.0
Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software
by Tim O'Reilly
The bursting of the dot-com bubble in the fall of 2001 marked a turning point for the web. Many people concluded that the web was overhyped, when in fact bubbles and consequent shakeouts appear to be a common feature of all technological revolutions. Shakeouts typically mark the point at which an ascendant technology is ready to take its place at center stage. The pretenders are given the bum's rush, the real success stories show their strength, and there begins to be an understanding of what separates one from the other.
The concept of 'Web 2.0' began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having 'crashed', the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as 'Web 2.0' might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born.
In the year and a half since, the term 'Web 2.0' has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom.
This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0."
