Penn:

"Teller and I have been brutal to Christians, and their response shows that they’re good fucking Americans who believe in freedom of speech. We attack them all the time, and we still get letters that say, “We appreciate your passion. Sincerely yours, in Christ.” Christians come to our show at the Rio and give us Bibles all the time. They’re incredibly kind to us. Sure, there are a couple of them who live in garages, give themselves titles and send out death threats to me and Bill Maher and Trey Parker. But the vast majority are polite, open-minded people, and I respect them for that."

Build A Flying Wing For Less Than $5 | The Hobby Guy

Build A Flying Wing For Less Than $5 | The Hobby Guy: "I am always happy to make things from cheap parts, especially when you add up all the money I spend on my hobbies. Building radio control airplanes from BlueCor (Fan Fold) foam board keeps cost down.

In addition to being low cost, Fan Fold airplanes are fast to build and easy to repair. This build should take less than two hours, and sans electronics, cost under $5.00. Compare this to commercial kits, which start at $40.00 for a box of foam. Forty Dollars is not a bad price, very good in my book, but you can build eight wings for the same price."

wincent.com: Fixing nginx client body temp permission denied errors

wincent.com: Fixing nginx client body temp permission denied errors:

"Diagnosis

Upon inspection, you see that /usr/local/nginx/client_body_temp/ is owned by the user that corresponds to one of your Rails applications (the first one that tried to create it). You'll see the problem only when the second application actually tries to use the client_body_temp folder.

The problem may take a while to materialize because the client_body_temp folder is only used if the body is sufficiently large enough to require it. In my case I saw the error the first time I tried to submit an edit for a wiki article that was beyond a certain size.

The fix

The fix is clear: each nginx master process must have it's own client_body_temp folder. The directive required is client_body_temp_path and it's documented here."

This upstart is Salman Khan, a 33-year-old who quit his job as a financial analyst to spend more time making homemade lecture videos in his home studio. His unusual teaching materials started as a way to tutor his faraway cousins, but his lectures have grown into an online phenomenon—and a kind of protest against what he sees as a flawed educational system.

ParkZone Vapor - EFlightWiki

ParkZone Vapor - EFlightWiki: "The Vapor is primarily designed for slow indoor flight, and is an excellent performer in this regard. It is capable of high-alpha flight at very low speeds and can turn rapidly, enabling flight in confined spaces. The flying weight of 15g makes the Vapor highly responsive to throttle and control inputs, and the low mass prevents damage in most crashes. The low weight also makes the Vapor sensitive to wind, including currents from air conditioning. Outdoor flight is possible only in dead-calm conditions."

Falkenblog: "At the end of the day most really great economic ideas aren't derived through the formalism of abstruse mathematics, but rather, finding an important parochial problem and solving it, and then fortuitously finding out it has general relevance. Math is merely a way to compliment the exposition of an economic idea, not to prove it: if an idea is only compelling within the context of a complex mathematical proof, it is probably not robust to slight changes in assumptions."

A computer program is writing great, original works of classical music. Will human composers soon be obsolete? - By Chris Wilson - Slate Magazine: "There's a reason Cope talks about composing this way: He is the inventor of the world's most musically creative computer program, whose latest album came out a few weeks ago. Cope has been writing software to help him compose music for 30 years, and he long ago reached the point where most people can't tell the difference between real Bach and the Bach-like compositions his computer can produce. Audiences have been moved to tears by melodies created by algorithms. And yet, it's not exactly that Cope has created a computer than can write music like a human. The way he sees it, it's that humans compose like computers."

TeleHash - Distributed JSON Peering Protocol

TeleHash - Distributed JSON Peering Protocol: "TeleHash is a new wire protocol for exchanging JSON in a real-time and fully decentralized manner, enabling applications to connect directly and participate as servers on the edge of the network. It is designed to efficiently route and distribute small bits of data in order for applications to discover each other directly or in relation to events around piece of shared content. The core benefits of TeleHash over other similar platforms and protocols is that it is both generic (not tied to any specific application or content structures) and is radically decentralized with no servers or points of central control.

It works by sending and receiving very simple small bits of JSON via UDP using an easy routing system based on Kademlia, a proven and popular Distributed Hash Table. Everything within TeleHash is routed based on a generic SHA hash, usually of something specific to an application or something common like a URL."

prototypes vs classes was: Re: Sun's HotSpot

prototypes vs classes was: Re: Sun's HotSpot: "The big idea is 'messaging' -- that is what the kernal of Smalltalk/Squeak is all about (and it's something that was never quite completed in our Xerox PARC phase). The Japanese have a small word -- ma -- for 'that which is in between' -- perhaps the nearest English equivalent is 'interstitial'. The key in making great and growable systems is much more to design how its modules communicate rather than what their internal properties and behaviors should be. Think of the internet -- to live, it (a) has to allow many different kinds of ideas and realizations that are beyond any single standard and (b) to allow varying degrees of safe interoperability between these ideas."

Ask Culture vs. Guess Culture

Ask MetaFilter

"This is a classic case of Ask Culture meets Guess Culture.

In some families, you grow up with the expectation that it's OK to ask for anything at all, but you gotta realize you might get no for an answer. This is Ask Culture.

In Guess Culture, you avoid putting a request into words unless you're pretty sure the answer will be yes. Guess Culture depends on a tight net of shared expectations. A key skill is putting out delicate feelers. If you do this with enough subtlety, you won't even have to make the request directly; you'll get an offer. Even then, the offer may be genuine or pro forma; it takes yet more skill and delicacy to discern whether you should accept.

All kinds of problems spring up around the edges. If you're a Guess Culture person -- and you obviously are -- then unwelcome requests from Ask Culture people seem presumptuous and out of line, and you're likely to feel angry, uncomfortable, and manipulated.

If you're an Ask Culture person, Guess Culture behavior can seem incomprehensible, inconsistent, and rife with passive aggression.

Obviously she's an Ask and you're a Guess. (I'm a Guess too. Let me tell you, it's great for, say, reading nuanced and subtle novels; not so great for, say, dating and getting raises.)

Thing is, Guess behaviors only work among a subset of other Guess people -- ones who share a fairly specific set of expectations and signalling techniques. The farther you get from your own family and friends and subculture, the more you'll have to embrace Ask behavior. Otherwise you'll spend your life in a cloud of mild outrage at (pace Moomin fans) the Cluelessness of Everyone.

As you read through the responses to this question, you can easily see who the Guess and the Ask commenters are. It's an interesting exercise."

The Illusiveness of the Entirely Useless | MetaFilter: "So, there's a Japanese artistic concept called a Thomasson. In short, they are 'defunct and useless objects, attached to someone's property and aesthetically maintained.' But a more nuanced explanation involves artist Akasegawa Genpei, baseball player Gary Thomasson, and a whole generation of Japanese kids who wandered around Tokyo, looking for architectural abnormalities."

Burtt is widely held to be one of the great geniuses of Hollywood filmmaking, and is the winner of a number of Oscars, as well as being the voice of the robot Wall-E in the film Wall-E. Burtt found The Wilhelm Scream in a sound vault under the title 'Man Being Eaten By Alligator,' and used it for the cry of a stormtrooper falling down a Death Star chasm in Star Wars."

11 Amazing Fake 'Harry Potter' Books Written In China - 11Points.com: "Yesterday, I stumbled upon the Chinese 'Harry Potter' fake book market. Here, it seems, Chinese authors have seized upon the Potter popularity and decided to run with it. It's hard to say how many new 'Harry Potter' books have come out of China -- most of the articles I read put it around a dozen -- I found almost twice that during my research and picked my 11 favorites to share here.

These are 11 amazing fake 'Harry Potter' novels written and bootlegged in China, and a little info I found out about each of them. Although they're truly unbelievable, each of these is very much real."

CultureLab: Top 10 greatest science fiction detective novels

CultureLab: Top 10 greatest science fiction detective novels: "China Miville's detective story The City And The City is well on its way to being the award-winningest novel of the year. But it's not the only great novel about science fiction/fantasy sleuths. Here are 10 other SF detective classics.

Speculative fiction and detective fiction have a lot in common -- they're both about digging down to the truth of matters. Fictional scientists and explorers, like detectives, follow clues and act on hunches. The truth is enshrouded in an ocean of red herrings and false trails. Plus, a lot of great science fiction authors, like Ray Bradbury and Robert Silverberg, also wrote detective novels, for money or as a change of pace."

Edsger Dijkstra - Discipline in Thought - good coders code, great reuse

Edsger Dijkstra - Discipline in Thought - good coders code, great reuse: "In the interview professor Edsger talks about his thoughts on software development. He compares two very different styles of programming - Mozart style of programming vs. Beethoven style of programming. When Mozart started to write, the composition was finished. He wrote manuscript in elegant handwriting in one go. Beethoven was a doubter and a struggler. He started writing before he finished the composition and then glued corrections onto the page. In one place he did it nine times. When they peeled them, the last version proved to be identical to the first one.

From the video one can understand that Edsger preferred Mozart's style of programming. Not just programming, but Mozart style of doing things. He says that the most important thing has been the daily discipline of neatly writing down his thoughts.

His daily discipline lead to hundreds of crystal clear scientific papers, which have now been archived in EWD Archive.

You are welcome to watch interview with Edsger Dijkstra:"

Yet there is a lot of confusion of what they are and how to use them.

The Non-Paradox of Choice - Jim Manzi - The Corner on National Review Online

The Non-Paradox of Choice - Jim Manzi - The Corner on National Review Online:

"Ultimately, the debate about choice is not about markets but about character. Liberty and responsibility really do go together; it's not just a platitude. The more freedom we have to control our lives, the more responsibility we have for how they turn out. In a world of constraints, learning to be happy with what you're given is a virtue. In a world of choices, virtue comes from learning to make commitments without regrets. And commitment, in turn, requires self-confidence and self-knowledge.

'We are free to be the authors of our lives,' says Schwartz, 'but we don't know exactly what kind of lives we want to 'write.'' Maturity lies in deciding just that."

SoundSource Provides Fast Audio Input and Output Switching - Audio - Lifehacker:

"SoundSource is a free download, Mac OS X 10.5 and above only.

Update: As many of you have pointed out in the comments, some of this functionally (specifically, the ability to switch input and output sources) is already available in the menu bar if you option click the volume icon (Snow Leopard only). If that's all you need, then do that instead—no need for extra software. However, the added ability to adjust volume levels and access, say, MIDI setup is a nice addition if you're doing something a bit more involved (or if you're still on Leopard)."

Computing Now | January 2009 | Theme: Software's 25th Anniversary:

"Sometimes the Old Ways Are Best
by Brian Kernighan

As I write this column, I'm in the middle of two summer projects; with luck, they'll both be finished by the time you read it. One involves a forensic analysis of over 100,000 lines of old C and assembly code from about 1990, and I have to work on Windows XP. The other is a hack to translate code written in weird language L1 into weird language L2 with a program written in scripting language L3, where none of the L's even existed in 1990; this one uses Linux. Thus it's perhaps a bit surprising that I find myself relying on much the same toolset for these very different tasks."

How to think like a Pythonista

How to think like a Pythonista: "NEVER does Python embark on the HUGE task of _deep_ copying unless you very specifically ask it to -- specifically with function deepcopy of module copy. DEEP copying is a serious matter -- function deepcopy has to watch out for cycles, reproduce any identity of references, potentially follow references to any depth, recursively -- it has to reproduce faithfully a graph of objects referencing each other with unbounded complexity. It works, but of course it can never be as fast as the mundane business of shallow copying (which in turn is never as fast as just handing out one more reference to an existing object, whenever the latter course of action is feasible)."
