Pleasing Wall Street is a Poor Excuse for Bad Decisions - Is the U.S. Killing Its Innovation Machine? - Harvard Business Review: "In such situations, you either have to replace a huge proportion of the managers, or, if the company is in terrible shape, just let it go under. I'm skeptical of bailing out failing companies largely because the people entrenched in those companies missed obvious signs of impending failure, and it is unlikely that those same people have any idea why they failed."

That's always been the basis of a RenderMan-centric pipeline. We have to be able to program everything. My Computer Repair Shop Numbers - pcrepairs's posterous: "I've been doing quite a few (mostly) pro bono computer repairs for friends, friends of friends, and family for the past few years. That, obviously, ate up a lot of my time and I saw little benefit from it. So, I decided to start a computer repair shop this past fall. It's not your typical tech-based startup, but a startup nonetheless.

I've been seeing consistent growth month to month. Most of my revenue has been been from virus and malware removal. I coupled the virus/malware removal with an antivirus installation service for $19 and most people gladly paid it."

The Transom Review: Ira Glass

The Transom Review: Ira Glass: "Ira Glass's Manifesto, Part One

Rather than talk about radio in a Big Picture way, I'm going to start with some simple things that might be useful to the radio beginners who come to Transom. I'm going to try to avoid repeating things I've said elsewhere about making radio stories, but I'm guessing some repetition is going to be inevitable. Elsewhere on the web you can find an old (and deeply edited) speech about making radio more fun here. There are some pages from the This American Life 'How to Make Radio' comic book here."

Current.org | Ira Glass on making radio, page 1: "This is a complete edited transcript from Glass's talk. A large excerpt was published in Current, May 25, 1998. Thanks to Minnesota Public Radio for the photos by Dan Monick and the tape.

By Ira Glass

I want to talk a little bit about making radio stories and how we do it on the show that's different from what is perhaps traditionally done on public radio.
No. 1: Seeking pleasure
No. 2: What we're all used to
No. 3: How we structure a story
No. 4: What people want
No. 5: Stroke of luck
No. 6: Surprises
No. 7: The 45-second rule
No. 8: Reading
No. 9: Another way to tell a story
No. 10: More dish
No. 11: Alex Chadwick
No. 12: How do you find these stories
No. 13: Mission"

Presentation Zen: Ira Glass:Tips on storytelling:

"In storytelling there are two basic building blocks, says Ira Glass:

(1) The anecdote, a sequence of actions, a story in its purest form, one thing following from another.

(2) The moment of reflection. What is the key point? What does this all mean?"

The Chess Master and the Computer - The New York Review of Books: "Having a computer partner also meant never having to worry about making a tactical blunder. The computer could project the consequences of each move we considered, pointing out possible outcomes and countermoves we might otherwise have missed. With that taken care of for us, we could concentrate on strategic planning instead of spending so much time on calculations. Human creativity was even more paramount under these conditions. Despite access to the 'best of both worlds,' my games with Topalov were far from perfect. We were playing on the clock and had little time to consult with our silicon assistants. Still, the results were notable. A month earlier I had defeated the Bulgarian in a match of 'regular' rapid chess 4–0. Our advanced chess match ended in a 3–3 draw. My advantage in calculating tactics had been nullified by the machine."

Method and system for distributed serverless file management

Abstract

A method for serverless data management includes receiving an asset identifier in a first system, receiving data associated with the asset identifier in the first system, determining a resource in a storage network for storage of the asset data, in response to a path algorithm and the asset identifier, wherein the determination is made substantially free of interaction with the storage network, storing the asset data on the resource, creating a link between the asset identifier and the resource in the first system, receiving the asset identifier in a second system, determining the storage resource where the asset data is stored, in response to the path algorithm and the asset identifier, wherein the determination is made substantially free of interaction with the storage network and the first system, and creating a link between the asset identifier and the resource in the second computer system.

"Harrison; Mark June 4, 2009
Storage Management for Renderfarm

Abstract

Systems and methods for storing assets in storage systems external to asset management systems while still allowing the asset management systems to track the stored assets are disclosed. One method begins by first receiving an asset to be stored in an asset management system. Next, a first location on a storage managed by the asset management system is determined. A second location on a storage system external to the asset management system is then determined. The external storage system has been configured to store the asset. The asset is then stored at the second location. A logical link is then determined to the second location. Finally, the logical link is stored at the first location. The disclosed systems and methods allow for an administrator to separate the storage methods used by asset management systems from the asset tracking and logging capabilities of asset management systems."

Economics is about the trade-offs people - and societies - have to make, and about helping people improve the trade-offs they're making."

Ever since I attended EuroSciPy in Leipzig earlier this year I have been excited about the possibilities offered by Python for students, researchers and teachers. I genuinely believe that Python and SAGE will do for MATLAB and Mathematica users what R has done for users of SPSS and Stata. It’s the future…I’ve tasted it! Here are a few links to others who agree with me.

sugar to taste (1/2 - 3/4 lb)

Beat eggs, add bourbon and rum slowly with stirring to prevent precipitation of egg proteins. Beat heavy cream separately until it peaks and add to the egg/bourbon/rum mix.
Add the light cream with stirring. Add the sugar to taste with mixing (1 pound/batch), then add nutmeg to taste.
Leave standing at least overnight with lid slightly ajar in refrigerator. Serve after 2-3 weeks in the cold."

The C Programming Language: 4.10

The C Programming Language: 4.10: "Recursion may provide no salvation of storage, nor of human souls; somewhere, a stack of the values being processed must be maintained. But recursive code is more compact, perhaps more easily understood– and more evil and hideous than the darkest nightmares the human brain can endure."

Some Debt-Laden Graduates Wonder Why They Bothered With College - ABC News

Some Debt-Laden Graduates Wonder Why They Bothered With College - ABC News: "Like most students, Kris Alfred was repeatedly told in high school that everyone goes to college.

Alfred said he owes more than $125,000 for his degrees in theater when he's not even working in that field.

Some experts say students might be better off getting a job after high school, rather than getting a college degree.

'I work at a call center, and I make $10 an hour,' he said. 'It's surreal. I feel like a loser.'"

The Heart of Dartness

The Heart of Dartness: "Darts is a popular game, played both in the pub and at a professional level. Yet most players aim for the highest scoring region of the board (triple 20), regardless of their skill level. It turns out that this is not always the optimal strategy! We describe a method for a player to obtain a customized heatmap of the dartboard. In this heatmap, the bright regions correspond to aiming locations which yield high (expected) scores. We also investigate alternate arrangements of the numbers 1 through 20, in an attempt to make scoring more difficult."

Ask E.T.: The magical number seven, plus or minus two: Not relevant for design: "These studies on memorizing nonsense then led some interface designers to conclude that only 7 items belong on a list or a slide, a conclusion which can be sustained only by not reading the paper. In fact Miller's paper neither states nor implies rules for the amount of information to be shown in a presentation (except possibly for slides that consist of nonsense syllables that the audience must memorize and repeat back to a psychologist). Indeed, the deep point of Miller's paper is to suggest strategies, such as placing information within a context, that extend the reach of memory beyond tiny clumps of data."

This wiki attempts to catalog some possible standards for encoding various types of information, and suggest a standard action associated to them. It is not necessarily complete and contributions are welcome."

Travel by Cargo Ship Around the World

Travel by Cargo Ship Around the World: "A far more intimate and relaxed experience than you might imagine, the experience on board is a sharp contrast to the rough and industrial outward appearance a container ship tends to project. You will be one of a handful of passengers amongst a crew that is unlikely to number more than a few dozen. There will be no organized games of bingo or evening cabaret show. You might, however, be invited to karaoke with the sailors and you will almost always dine alongside the captain, who is far more likely to turn up in shorts and a t-shirt than full uniform."

Wii.com - Iwata Asks: New Super Mario Bros. Wii: "In this interview, we're going to talk about New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but rather than diving straight into a discussion of the new title, I'd like to begin by talking about Mario's roots. There will of course be a lot of readers who know all about this, but I think there are also people who are completely in the dark about how Mario began."

Bones Theory

Bones Theory: "Soldiers are entitled to the best leadership possible, said Command Sgt. Maj. Michele Jones, command sergeant major of the Army Reserve. She said she follows the Bones Theory, which entails having

a backbone (courage),
a wishbone (a belief that things will get better),
a funny bone (laughter) and
a tailbone (“You can’t be the best if you don’t get off your tailbone and make things better.”)."

The Pomodoro Technique™

The Pomodoro Technique™:

"The basic unit of work in the Pomodoro Technique™ can be split in five simple steps:

1. Choose a task to be accomplished
2. Set the Pomodoro to 25 minutes (the Pomodoro is the timer)
3. Work on the task until the Pomodoro rings, then put a check on your sheet of paper
4. Take a short break (5 minutes is OK)
5. Every 4 Pomodoros take a longer break"
