Oracle Tips - PL/SQL Cursor For Loop

Oracle Tips - PL/SQL Cursor For Loop: "The CURSOR FOR is a very efficient cursor. Lines 2 through 6 define the cursor. Line 8 handles opening the cursor, fetching the rows, testing for new rows, and exiting when a new row is not returned. Notice that the record r_c8 is not defined in the declaration section. The CURSOR FOR automatically defines r_c8 as a c8%rowtype. The scope for r_c8 is only inside the CURSOR FOR loop. Likewise, the cursor attributes for cursor c8 are defined only inside the CURSOR FOR loop. "

The Taxonomy of Logical Fallacies

The Taxonomy of Logical Fallacies: "The Taxonomy is more useful than the alphabetical index for studying the logical relationships between fallacies. To understand an individual fallacy, it may be helpful to move upward in the Taxonomy via the 'Type' link, in order to understand the more general fallacy of which it is a subfallacy. Also, moving downward via the 'Subfallacy' link can help in understanding a general fallacy through seeing a more specific version of it. Finally, moving sideways via the 'Sibling' link can help to explain the nature of a fallacy by comparing it with a similar one of the same basic type. Some individual fallacies―such as Wishful Thinking―are found in more than one spot in the Taxonomy, which is because they are subfallacies of more than one type of fallacy."

Fighting the Flying Circus

Fighting the Flying Circus:

"FIGHTING THE FLYING CIRCUS
BY EDDIE RICKENBACKER

This on-line edition of Eddie Rickenbacker's World War One memoirs dates from the original version published by Stokes in 1919. Captain Rickenbacker, originally from Ohio, was best known as one of the Commanders of the 94th 'Hat-in-the-Ring' Squadron, a crack unit of pilots which included many former members of the famed Lafayette Escadrille. The 94th ended the war in France with the highest number of air victories of any American squadron. Captain Rickenbacker later belonged to an association of pilots and Great War air veterans who, in the years immediately following the Second World War, invited many of the new 'young' aces from the Pacific and European theaters for informal lectures. These men never lost their keen interest in aviation."

Ratatouille Wine

Wine Spectator | Articles | Unfiltered June 27, 2007: "We have to admit, when we heard Disney had teamed up with Costco to put a cartoon character on a wine label, we scratched our heads. About as good an idea as the candy cigarette, was our first thought. Then we went online and saw the trailer for the new Pixar film Ratatouille, and only two words came to mind: Brilliant. Marketing. Ratatouille is the story of a rat named Remy who's working behind the scenes in a top Paris restaurant. The chefs, it turns out, are no good--it's the rat who's secretly adding spices and adjusting stocks to win diners' acclaim. Since food and wine go so well together, Disney has introduced the Ratatouille wine, being carried by Costco, to help promote the food-friendly film. Of course, the wine is French--a 2004 white Burgundy from the Mcon's Chteau de Messey, and will be available Aug. 1 at Costco stores in 18 states for $13. We just hope it's OK to sneak some of the wine into the theater while we watch the movie."

Global Nerdy Blog Archive Laws of Software Development

Global Nerdy Blog Archive Laws of Software Development: "Inspired by Phil Haack’s article 19 Eponymous Laws of Software Development, I decided to collect laws, axioms and rules pertaining to mainstream software development and put them in a nice, easy-to-read table.

This is by no means a complete list of laws; I’ve purposely stuck to the ones that apply to everyday software development and steered clear of the more theoretical ones. Maybe I’ll compile a more complete list someday.

You’ll notice that some of the laws come from the world of biology — they also appear in some lists of software laws, and I think they still apply."

3D-Stereogram Tetris by ~3Dimka on deviantART: "Artist's Comments
The idea is not that new, but this might be the first flash version of Magic Eye Tetris.
There's no preloader, so please be patient while whole thing being loaded.

Flash itself does not have ability to render stereograms so I had to prerender all 256 combinations of cells in a row. That's why the file is pretty big ( 1.4 Mbytes).

Playing tetris in Magic Eye mode is quite a challenge, so I really appreciate your try. And please drive responsible after ;) LOL
As for me, I can play this legendary game for hours and hours. Oh yeah, some creds to the creator of tetris Alexey Pazhitnov - [link] (thanks man!)

Have fun!

Discover APL | Vector - the array languages

Discover APL | Vector - the array languages: "The 1960s and 70s saw many efforts to produce VHLLs that would lower the skill requirements for programmers, a general strategy of industrialisation. The APL community played no part in this. Iverson stressed the importance of APL as a “tool of thought”, a notation to help humans describe and solve complex problems. We were not trying to make everyday programming easy; we wanted to solve harder problems faster. (The complete code for calculating the mean of a list of numbers requires 4 characters in J.) Ironically, experience shows APLs are easier for novices to learn than conventional PLs."

InnoVis - Phyllo Trees: "PhylloTrees: Phyllotactic Patterns for Tree Layout

We explore the use of nature’s phyllotactic patterns to inform the layout of hierarchical data. These naturally occurring patterns provide a non-overlapping, optimal packing when the total number of nodes is not known a priori. PhylloTrees are a family of expandable tree layouts that we developed based on these patterns."

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories - Cooking hot dogs via electrocution: "How to cook hot dogs... with electricity!

[Disclaimerzilla: While we could give you lots of warnings about all the different dangers involved and how to possibly skirt them, the simple truth is that this just isn't safe. If you are foolish enough to attempt this, you will have to deal with pointy things, raw electricity out of the wall, hot steam, and the possibility of fire. If that isn't enough, and you succeed, you are still faced with the possibility of having to eat a hot dog. In summary: do not, under any circumstances, cook hot dogs this way.]"

Macworld: Mac OS X Hints: Set newer portable Macs' sleep mode

Macworld: Mac OS X Hints: Set newer portable Macs' sleep mode: "There are some downsides to this, however. You’ll give up some hard drive space, for instance—an amount of space equal to your machine’s RAM, plus another 750MB. So on my MacBook, that’s 2.75GB of drive space, or just under 4 percent of my drive’s capacity. In addition, putting the machine into sleep mode takes notably longer. If you watch the video I created, there’s a delay of 10 or so seconds between the time the lid is closed and the power light goes from solid to its normal gentle blinking state. It’s during this time that the machine is writing the contents of RAM to the hard drive. As I noted, in theory nothing should go wrong if you decide to open the lid during this period (when you realize you forgot to print that one important document, for instance). However, there are quite a few stories of people doing just this, and winding up with a machine with a black screen, requiring a full restart to recover."

Screeds

Screeds: "Another of Mankind's master intellects, Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, has approached bureaucratic inefficiency from the standpoint of the incentives that govern the use of resources, particularly money. He presented the following matrix of spending decisions:

The Benefit Will Accrue To Me
The Benefit Will Accrue To Others
The Cost Will Be Borne By Me
The Cost Will Be Borne By Others

This is the incentives matrix each of us faces any time he has to make a spending decision."

"
Robert Conquest's Three Laws of Politics:
  1. Everyone is conservative about what he knows best.
  2. Any organization not explicitly right-wing sooner or later becomes left-wing.
  3. The simplest way to explain the behavior of any bureaucratic organization is to assume that it is controlled by a cabal of its enemies.

Growing Tomatoes Upside Down? An Alternative Garden Plan

Growing Tomatoes Upside Down? An Alternative Garden Plan: "We've been growing our tomatoes upside-down for the past three years and really have fun growing them this way! We also grow tomatoes in the ground, and, by comparison, the ones in the upside-down buckets seem to have a little better yield than the same varieties grown in the ground. I attribute it to the fact that the branches have less stress while growing, and have better air circulation. Of course, you have to grow smaller varieties or ones that are suited for container growing, or the yields will be less.

We've experimented with growing peppers and have found that sweet bells do not do good because the branches break very easily. Varieties such as Cayenne, Tabasco, or ones that produce small fruit, will grow fine."
